Reading List on the History of Education in Harlem

This list includes more than 140 books and articles related to the history of education in Harlem. It was compiled by the Harlem Education History Project. Some of these resources are available in public and university libraries. Others are in academic journals that are very expensive if you are not affiliated with a university. In those cases, consider emailing the author to ask them to send you a copy!

New York City Civil Rights History Project

The New York City Civil Rights History Project includes three pieces of Wadleigh history: a map showing how the NYC Board of Education created the attendance zone for Wadleigh in the 1930s and 1940s and materials about Lucile Spence, who was a student at Wadleigh when she was profiled in the children’s magazine _The Brownies Book, and who later was a teacher at Wadleigh who organized with others for better conditions at Wadleigh in the 1930s and 1940s.

Scholar Kimberley Johnson wrote this essay in the 2019 book Educating Harlem: A Century of Schooling and Resistance in a Black Community,.
